Ice Climber: NES
The Game That Started Them Off...

Written by Hutz

The Ice Climbers are very unique fighters in SSBM. Since they fight together, opponents suffer a double dose of attacks. They debuted on the NES in the 1984 game Ice Climber. As you can see in the screenshots below, their Target Test arena does resemble the game.

The basic premise is to make your way to the top of each mountain by jumping up one level at a time. You're armed with a mallet to smash the ice and enemies that get in your way. While the mallet only stuns ground creatures, it destroys flying creatures for big points. Ice and enemies aren't your only obstacles - sometimes, the only way to proceed is to hitch a ride on clouds that whiz across the screen. Timing your jumps on these is essential, as one wrong step could send you off the mountain.

Once you reach each mountain's Bonus Stage, you're only playing for points. While collecting as many of the four veggies as you can, you must make your way to the bird at the very top of the mountain in 40 seconds. When you reach the bird, fall off the mountain, or run out of time, you're taken to the next mountain. There's a total of 32 mountains to traverse.

Like Super Smash Bros. Melee, while Ice Climber is a great solo adventure, it's remarkably fun with a friend. Unlike most NES games back then, Ice Climber was actually a Two-Player game, not a cheesy alternating-player setup. You can either work as a team to make it up the mountain, or try to race each other up the mountain to leave the other one behind the scroll, making them lose a life. Once you reach the Bonus Stage, it's a frantic scramble to gather more veggies than your opponent and reach the bird first.

On the NES they were nothing but a few pixels. Not anymore. In SSBM, the Ice Climbers have a totally 3D look, with realistic parka textures and bright, smiling faces. It's not hard to picture this duo starring in another adventure.
