What would a Detstar website be without a page dedicated to all the cool
details and tidbits found in a game? In addition to the actual gameplay,
many games have all kinds of miscellaneous items that often go unnoticed.
Below are all the interesting things that have been found so far in Super
Smash Bros Melee.
If you've found something in the game that should be posted here, feel
free to send it in. E-mail your discoveries to DetErest@detstar.com.

Never Too Late...
This discovery has been around for a
while... There's a hidden message in the trophy gallery, on
the bottom of the Barrel Cannon trophy. The message reads
"2L84ME", which is code for "Too Late For Me".
The meaning of course, is open to interpretation. Some say
that once you're stuck in here, you often feel a sense of
doom, meaning it's too late...
I snapped this screenshot for an update in 2002. I recall
writing the text, with the heading "Message on a Barrel"...
But somehow, it never actually appeared on the website, and
I assumed it was tucked away on one of these "stuff"
pages. I blame some kind of strange Matrix glitch on this
one...

Sleeping Awake...
An observation from Kirby's Fountain
of Dreams arena, involving the reflective puddle that covers
a good chunk of the fighting surface. If Jigglypuff performs
her rest move (down +B), her eyes will close - But in the
reflection, her eyes are still wide open. The same can also
be seen here with Luigi, but Puff's eyes are bigger and easier
to notice.

The
View Up There...
Between battles in the All-Star mode,
you'll find yourself in a pleasant green field with powerups
and trees. If you jump up and pause the game to scan the background,
you can see some kind of... Something. It looks a bit like
a fountain, but it could be a different type of structure.
A thin like can be seen heading straight up, which looks a
bit like a flagpole.

Taunting
Twice...
Just a little thing about Falco and
Fox McCloud when you set the game's language to Japanese...
When you press up on the control pad to use their taunt move,
each character will randomly perform one of two different
taunts. Can anyone out there who speaks Japanese tell me what
the two StarFox team members are saying?

Not Just a Dream...
Characters can be seen in the background
of the special Dreamland (Past Stages) arena... If you unlock
this classic battlefield, you can spot King Dedede flying
around behind the stage. Occasionally, an angry, winged Kirby
will also fly by.

Second
Smash...
Hidden in the background of Mute City,
are a few billboards that read "Smash 2". They're
fairly small, and go by pretty quickly... Right after passing
a tunnel, you'll need to keep your eyes out for these signs
on either side of the racetrack. Is "Smash 2" merely
just a nickname for Melee, or could the name of the game originally
have been titled "Smash 2"? Either way, it's a cool
find.

Poster
Power
When scouting Mute City to find
the billboards mentioned above, I noticed some distant
graphics slightly after those signs. Originally, I thought
it was a Mario design of some sort... |
A
close-up of the poster reveals that there are F-Zero racing
pilots featured here. You can clearly make out the face
of Captain Falcon in the center of the poster, with Dr.
Stewart visible on the right side. |
It
was hard to get a full and head-on view of the poster,
so I merged the two screenshots above to come up with
this. It was tricky to get everything to merge properly
with the angles, but I think I came close with this creation.
It's a bit fuzzy, so I still can't make out who's on the
left side of the poster. There's a bit of green, and that
could be a clue... |
|
UPDATE:
The mystery of the blurry F-Zero poster is now solved.
A real-life promotional graphic has been discovered,
featuring seven F-Zero racing pilots. In addition to
Captain Falcon and Dr. Stewart mentioned above, there's
also Mr. EAD,
Pico, and Samurai Goroh... As well as a few bits and
pieces from The Mighty Gazelle and Jody Summers. This
graphic was reversed from it's original state, to match
it with the way it appears in SSBM for comparison purposes.
Thanks
to Lance Way for finding this graphic.

Dash
Discovery
While playing through Mute City a few
times trying to pause at the right instant to snap a shot
of the poster, I also noticed the dash arrows on the racetrack
itself. In the F-Zero racing series, these dash arrows act
as boosters to give machines a quick burst of speed. I hadn't
noticed this one before, possibly by constant distractions
caused by dealing with opponents...

An
Apple A Day...
Something that's probably well known,
but never mentioned on the website anywhere... In Kirby's
Green Greens arena, apples will occasionally fall from the
tree in the background. Some of them explode, some of them
recover health, while you can huck some of them at fellow
players.

Small
Smokestack
A small detail here in the Onett stage...
On the right side of the arena, there's a house with a chimney.
Every so often, a puff of smoke will come out of the chimney.
I hadn't noticed this little background detail either.

Dungeon Door
Something that I only discovered
a few weeks ago in the Hyrule Temple... On the left side
of the arena, there's a series of ledges that lead back
up to the top. On the very first ledge, dungeon doors
with bars can be seen on either side. You need to pause
the game, and tilt the camera to see them. A well-hidden
background detail for sure. |
UPDATE:
After
posting this newfound dungeon door, someone discovered
a little bit of a glitch and sent it to me... If you choose
a character with a special charge move (Like Samus' charge
shot or Link/Young Link's bow and arrow), you can cause
yourself to be pushed back through the door when you unleash
your attack. Of course you can't actually get to a secret
area or anything, but it just looks weird as part of your
body disappears through the grating. |

Castle
Comparison...
The special movie that you can
watch inside one of the Melee menus offers all kinds
of neat character poses and situations... But many players
have noticed something near the start of the video...
Here in the Hyrule Temple, a type of platform can be
seen on the very bottom right of this snapshot. (To
see this video, head to the game's main menu. Choose
Data, Archives, and then Special Movie)
|
The
special movie was presumably recorded before the game
was finished. In the final version of the game, there's
a little platform down there, but it's smaller, and has
a different texture. Not a huge detail, but it shows a
bit of a change that occurred as the game was being developed. |

Poké Pyrotechnics...
In the Pokémon Stadium arena,
fireworks can be seen way off in the distance. You'll need
to jump up high to make them come into view. To the right
we can see a firework exploding behind Mewtwo's tail, with
another firework shooting upwards in front of him.

|
Thunder
& Lightning...
Something that I can't believe I never
noticed before, was the storm cloud that appears above Pikachu
or Pichu whenever they perform their thunder (down + B) attack.
We normally only see the lightning bolt as it strikes, but
if a character is up high enough, they can catch a glimpse
of the cloud where the electrical energy came from.
